WHOOP 5.0: What to Know
WHOOP is a different category of product from the other four trackers in this guide, and we want to be upfront about that rather than glossing over it. There's no screen on the band itself; all data lives in the WHOOP phone app. More importantly, every listing we found for the WHOOP 5.0, on Amazon, Best Buy and other retailers, sells it as a bundle: the hardware plus a required membership (commonly a 12-month WHOOP One or Peak plan), and the device simply does not function without an active subscription. This isn't an optional Premium tier layered on top of a working free product, the way it is with Fitbit or Garmin; the membership is the product.
The Amazon listing we verified is the 'WHOOP One Bundle,' which includes the WHOOP 5.0 wearable, a 12-month WHOOP One membership, a CoreKnit wristband, and a corded battery pack, priced at $267 at the time of our check. After that included 12-month term ends, WHOOP's published pricing shows standard renewal rates of roughly $199/year for the One plan or $239/year for Peak, or about $30/month if you go month-to-month, so this is very much an ongoing cost, not a one-and-done purchase.
In exchange, WHOOP does deliver a genuinely deep sensor set: continuous heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), SpO2, skin temperature, and respiratory rate, feeding into its Strain, Recovery and Sleep scores plus VO2 max estimates. Battery life is rated at 14+ days thanks to a clever wireless battery pack you clip on without removing the band. There's no built-in GPS and no independent route mapping; WHOOP leans entirely on its physiological sensors rather than location data, and it's rated waterproof for showering and swimming.
We're including it here because plenty of serious athletes specifically want this kind of recovery and strain coaching and are fine paying for it ongoing. But if what you actually want is a simple tracker you buy once and own, the membership requirement makes WHOOP 5.0 a meaningfully different commitment than everything else on this list, and worth thinking through before you buy.
