Product overview
What the GS308 Actually Offers
The GS308 gives you eight true 1Gbps Ethernet ports behind a 16Gbps non-blocking switching fabric, which just means every port can run at full gigabit speed at the same time without the switch itself becoming a bottleneck. Ports auto-negotiate speed and duplex and support auto MDI/MDI-X, so any standard Ethernet cable works in any port without crossover cables.
It's fully unmanaged: there's no web interface, no app, and nothing to configure. You plug in power, run one cable from the switch to your router or existing network, and the remaining seven ports are immediately live. That simplicity is the entire selling point — and also the ceiling. There's no VLAN support, no QoS traffic prioritization, no port monitoring, and no PoE, so it can't power an access point or camera on its own.
The housing is a fanless, all-metal enclosure, which keeps it silent and gives it a sturdier feel than plastic-cased competitors — useful if it's sitting in a media cabinet or on a desk. It can be placed flat on a desktop or wall-mounted using the built-in keyholes on the back.
On evidence quality: we found real hands-on write-ups from consumer tech outlets (Gaming PC Guru, GameTestedTech) that confirm the specs and describe day-to-day use, plus NETGEAR's own published datasheet for the exact port and switching-capacity numbers above. We did not find an independent engineering lab report (packet-loss, jitter, or sustained-load testing) for this specific model — the throughput claims trace back to the switch simply meeting the standard gigabit Ethernet spec, not a third-party benchmark unique to this unit.
Aggregated owner ratings we found (CDW's listing) run very high, though the review count there is small, so treat it as a directional signal rather than a large sample. NETGEAR backs the unmanaged 300-series switches, including the GS308, with a published limited hardware warranty.
What Owners Report
Recurring themes synthesized from the linked owner-review sources. These are reported experiences, not TopFiveFind test results.
Reliability
CDW's customer ratings for the GS308 run very high, with buyers citing dependable, always-on operation — though the published review count there is small, so treat it as a directional signal.
Simplicity
Reviewers consistently describe true plug-and-play setup: connect power and a single uplink cable, and the rest of the ports are instantly active with nothing to configure.
