Echelon EX5 (substituted for Echelon EX-5s): What to Know
Substitution disclosure: the original candidate here was the Echelon EX-5s, which has an integrated 22-inch rotating touchscreen. We verified that model directly through Amazon and could not find a working, first-party new listing for it; Amazon currently carries an "Amazon Renewed" (used/refurbished) EX-5s listing and a separate, currently-inactive "Connect EX-5" dp page, but the EX-5s-22 with its built-in screen is sold new through echelonfit.com, Best Buy, and Walmart rather than Amazon. What Amazon does actively sell new, with a working buy box, is the plain EX5: essentially the same bike platform without the built-in monitor.
Instead of a screen, the EX5 has a 360-degree rotating device holder that grips your own tablet or phone, and pairs over Bluetooth to the Echelon Fit app for automatic resistance control during classes. Echelon's own spec sheet lists a 28-lb flywheel, 32 levels of magnetic resistance, a 300-lb max user weight, and dual-sided SPD-compatible/toe-cage pedals, closely mirroring the Schwinn IC4's approach but built specifically around Echelon's own app ecosystem rather than being app-agnostic.
The bike ships with a 30-day free trial of Echelon's membership; after that, accessing the live and on-demand class library requires an ongoing Echelon Premier membership, which runs roughly $33 a month on an annual plan (higher month-to-month) per Echelon's own membership page. That's a real recurring cost on top of the bike itself, and unlike the Schwinn IC4, the EX5 is built around Echelon's app specifically rather than being compatible with several third-party options.
If what actually drew you to the EX-5s was its built-in screen, know that this substitute doesn't have one, you'll be using your own device on a rotating mount instead. If it was Echelon's resistance system, compact frame, and class library you wanted, the EX5 delivers all of that at a lower price than the screened model, just with one extra piece (your own tablet) to set up.
